Hey guysss! I’m back. Today is a more serious kind of post I guess. As you probably know, there have been protests all over the world supporting the #blacklivesmatter movement. For hundreds of years, black people and people of colour have been oppressed and looked down upon. Since the time of slavery, unfortunately when we look at the facts, not much has changed. Governments all over the world favour those who don’t have a minority background or heritage. Society tends to treat POC unfairly and with injustice compared to how they treat white people. This is something called White privilege.
On 25 May, George Floyd was inhumanly killed by a white police officer called Derek Chauvin. George allegedly used a forged $20 bill therefore the police arrested him. Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck stopping his oxygen supply. A video of this happening was filmed and quickly spread across social media shocking the world. In the video George is saying ‘I can’t breathe’ while the police man kneels on his neck.
After many protests and petitions from all over the world, Floyd’s murderer was eventually charged. However, he was only charged with 3rd degree murder meaning it was by accident, and from the images from the videos, this is clearly not the case. Three other police officers were also involved in the murder and they had not been charged. This made the world angry. They were many more protests until Chauvin’s charge was changed to 2nd degree and the other officers were charged.
Unfortunately, there have been many more examples where black people have died because of police brutality or simply for the colour of their skin. Breonna Taylor a black woman was shot in her own home by police. Ahmaud Arbery was shot while jogging in the park. Sadly, this is just a tiny fraction of the unfair killings of black people.
What some people need to understand is that BLACK LIVES MATTER. How many times do you need to hear it to understand. The whole world at the moment is chanting this phrase yet some people in the world still want to be racist. And it’s no good saying that you are non-racist. In today’s world you need to be ANTI-racist. And then there’s the delusional people that say ‘ bUt AlL LiVeS mAtTeR’. Nobody has said that all lives do not matter, of course they matter. But at the moment we are concentrating on the people who need help. All lives cannot matter until black lives matter too. It’s like if they was a park run supporting breast cancer you wouldn’t run around screaming ‘ALL CANCERS MATTER’.
Some people are wondering why people have all of a sudden started protesting now. They are wondering why haven’t people always been protesting if it has always been a problem. Here’s the thing there have always been protests, however the death of George Floyd was the tipping point. The last straw. Nowadays we also have the power of social media to help us. Social media helps us spread awareness and it can help educated people on the subject. The whole world saw the graphic videos and it shocked them.
Then there’s white privilege. Think about it. If there was a job on offer and there was a white person and a black person applying for the job with the same skills to offer who would the employer pick? The white person. In many countries such as America, when a black person goes outside it is like they are gambling for their life. The colour of their skin is seen as weapon. That doesn’t happen with white people. Another example of white privilege is the case of Madeleine McCann compared to the case of Shukri Abdi.
Madeleine McCann , a white middle-class girl ,went missing in 2007 and roughly £11m has been spent looking for her. Shukri Abdi was a Somalian refugee who was bullied at school. She was murdered and drowned by her own racist classmates. There were eyewitnesses and Shukri came out of the water with bite marks on her body yet the police have called it a tragic accident. Shukri came from Somalia where she had to deal with 40+ degree heat and she could deal with the British summer heat so she just had to go for a dip in the river??? Shukri’s family says she couldn’t even swim. The school that Shukri and her killers went to have given ‘support’ to the killers that they need. How disgusting is that. Police still refuse to reopen her case. This just shows white privilege. If Shukri had been a white girl and her killers were black she would have already been served justice.
As a mixed Black and Arab muslim girl, I have of course experienced racism in my life. However, because I live in London, I have no where near experienced it as badly as others. Some places are not as POC friendly.
There are many things you can do to help this cause. Protests all over the world have been happening. The media unfortunately at moment have been only should more violent protests and the lootings. There are many local and peaceful protests probably happening near you. Just make sure that if you do choose to go to a protest to stay safe and wear a mask. Another thing you could do to help is by donating money. This may be donating money to reopen cases, or money that goes to supporting black owned businesses or even providing money for education. If you are unable to donate money, there are many quick petitions you can sign. Petitions can help to reopen cases and have the right people charged.
So that is for today. I hope that from reading this you may have become more educated about the situation and cause and that it could have possibly opened your eyes to the problems around us.
